Parts of a whole - Nienhuis AMI
Sight is a complex function of the brain that extends from the front to the back of the head. The last part of the brain involved in sight is the visual cortex, where sensory and motor information is integrated with vision. As the young child's mind develops and moves towards abstraction, we often try to provide such sensory opportunities in an effort to train the brain to identify objects.
Complex reading skills, such as sight word identification, word and letter direction, are often associated with early skills of discriminating between parts and wholes. Careful consideration has been given here so that we can provide opportunities in which children can identify a shape when only part of the whole object is visible. These visual discrimination games provide initial experiences to help children differentiate not only shapes, but also letters and numbers.
Game 1 deals with living objects that are commonly found in the classroom, in the form of real objects, pictures or models. Each image has two counterparts: half of the image is presented horizontally or vertically and corresponds to the whole image. Set 2 covers common household items that children may find in their homes or classrooms. Each image is designed to show sections of the set without horizontal or vertical control. This material comes pre-cut with all corners rounded.
